To be completely frank, as a person who cares a lot of fashion, I sometimes ask myself "Miguel, why can't you just wear whatever crumpled up T-shirt you have laying around, any pair of shorts, a pair of sneakers and call it a day? Why spend so much effort on clothing?" It usually takes me about five seconds to snap out of it and realize that fashion is everywhere, it is a part of all of our lives, it can connect different cultures with each other and even be a symbol of history, empowerment, rebellion, etc. Fashion plays a distinct role in politics, entertainment, history, culture, business, and many more fields. Let's look at politics. Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump in last year's election, just in case you didn't know, and during her concession speech, Clinton wore a dark grey pantsuit with shimmery purple patches on the folds of her jacket. Alongside her, her husband (former President) Bill Clinton wore a typical suit with, you guessed it, a tie of the same purple color. This was not just a coincidence, it was much more than that; it was a statement of unity through fashion. Hillary and Bill Clinton were symbolizing, through their clothing, the coming-together of the country after a divisive election season that pinned Americans against each other. The purple most likely represented the merging colors of the republicans (red) and the democrats (blue), together forming the color purple. This is just one small example of several other incidents of fashion playing a role in politics. Keep in mind that for televised debates, interviews, rally, and other campaigning events, politicians are going to be representing themselves to the entire country, and even the entire world, so clothing must be chosen wisely so that their personal style can shine through and so people can see who they really are. Let's discuss fashion in entertainment. Any award show that will ever be aired on live television mat likely will have a red carpet where the celebrities will be interviewed and photographed. The moment a celebrity gets to the red carpet, the only thing people begin talking about is the fashion. The next day, countless talk shows and televised programs talk about the celebrities' outfits and their fashion choices. This then leads fashion into the advertising industry because these celebrities are advertising the designers of their gowns, suits, and clothing simply through showing up at these events.
Do you get my point? Fashion is no joke. It is important and should be cherished. That is why I am having some trouble with narrowing down my options of a cover story. There is simply so much to talk about because fashion is always going to be an evolving industry. I want something relevant in society but I still want it to directly relate to fashion. Here are my ideas so far, I'll let you guys know when I finally narrow it down. (If you want more perspectives/information on the importance of fashion, check out this link by the Huffington Post)
